Some believe that there should be an asterisk on his record since the MLB increased the number of games played from 154 in Babe Ruth’s era to 162 in 1961. Mickey Mantle gave Maris a run for his money, hitting 54 homers and leading the league in slugging percentage. He would go on to win the MVP in 1962, leading in both on-base percentage and slugging percentage. Maris edged Mantle by just 4 points in voting, winning 202-198.
